Wilmington’s Domestic Violence Shelter & Services Needs You

domestic violence shelter

While some families have the benefit of enjoying extra time at home right now, other local families are dealing with increased dangers of domestic violence. J. Michael joins us for our Ministry Focus representing Wilmington’s Open Gate Domestic Violence Shelter. There is tremendous need right now, and individuals and organizations can help.

In recent weeks, there has been a significant increase in families reaching out to the shelter seeking help. On average, they see about 8 families per week. However, they saw 17 families in the past week, above the average by 114%. Usually the stay is 2 weeks long, but now that average is 52 days.

Under normal circumstances, the shelter provides more than just a safe place to stay. They also walk them through the court requirements, give guidance on how to get a new job, and several other services. Many of those services aren’t possible at the moment. Also, the extra financial assistance from Vintage Values Resale Stores is stalled as stores are currently closed due to COVID -19.

Thankfully, several local restaurants have stepped up to help. In addition to J. Michaels Philly Deli, restaurants including Moe’s, Brunches, and Taste of Italy have provided food for families being housed by the shelter. However, more restaurants and organizations are needed to help provide food.

There are also many things that individuals can do to help. Families served are still in need of underwear, socks and clothing. Also, they are in need of activities to pass the time, such as games, decks of cards, and children’s books.

If you can help the Open Gate Domestic Violence Shelter, please call them at 910-343-0703 or go to domesticviolence-wilm.org.
